Financial advisor Peter Stein grew up in Maine and seems eager to get back home. “While I live in New York now, as I build out my financial planning practice, the plan is for my wife and I to migrate back,” he said.

Stein works through Northwestern Mutual to provide comprehensive financial planning to businesses and the self-employed. “I focus my practice on working with those in the maritime and lobstering industries in Maine and elsewhere,” Stein said. “They are a hard-working group who often lack ‘out of the box’ perks and employer benefits that make life easier for folks who aren’t self-employed, such as health insurance, income protection benefits, or tax investment vehicles like 401ks.”
A lobsterman might not have a lot of time to think about planning for his or her financial future. Understanding all the possibilities is daunting for most people but, Stein’s expertise helps make that planning less formidable. “A lot of the work my team and I do is in helping business owners understand their options. In particular, we focus a lot on tax mitigation strategies,” he said. “I saw joining the MLA as a great way to support an organization that’s doing a lot of good for my clients.”
Lobstermen can make a lot of money over the course of their fishing careers. Making sure that money is working for you while you put in years on the water means that when you get done fishing, there is something sound to retire on. “I’m happy to walk any fellow MLA member through my process and create a completely complimentary plan because, at the end of the day, I want to help the folks who are fueling this integral industry in Maine,” Stein said.
