One of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association’s (MLA) long-standing business members is Smithwick & Mariners Insurance, now a division of Brown & Brown Insurance Services, one of the largest brokerages in the world. “That, coupled with deep, local knowledge and experience in the marine segment offer our clients the best combination of service and competitive rates,” Scott Smithwick said.

For more than two decades, Smithwick & Mariners (now Brown & Brown) has offered a discount boat insurance policy to MLA members. The current policy, underwritten by Travelers Insurance, does not require a layup period and offers pollution coverage when P&I insurance is purchased, as well as coverage for any researchers aboard the vessel. The company also can provide Jones Act coverage for the captain and crew and loss of earnings coverage for a covered hull claim. Coverage also is available for older vessels, including wooden boats, in acceptable condition. Builders Risk coverage is available for new builds. And any MLA member who has taken a Coast Guard drill conductor course in the last five years receives an additional 5% off his or her policy.
With offices in Damariscotta and Falmouth lobstermen continue to see familiar faces, such as Scott and Chris Smithwick as well as account managers Laura Woodley, Kathryn Blaisdell and Nicole Davenport ready to handle your inquiries. Aside from providing coverage for lobster boats (and other types of commercial vessels), our office can also offer personal insurance (home, auto, life) as well as commercial coverage (shore-side marine businesses to include co-ops, boatyards, repair contractors and more).
They say it’s good to have someone watching your back and when it comes to marine insurance for commercial fisherman, that someone continues to be Smithwick & Mariners.
