Local Events Support MLCA's Mission

Two culinary events this year brought Maine’s coastal communities together in support of the Maine Lobster Community Alliance (MLCA), a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the state’s iconic lobster fishery and the people behind it.

In February 2025, Chowder’s On! made a flavorful splash in Kittery for its third year, drawing more than 200 chowder lovers from near and far. The event, hosted by a group of dedicated volunteers led by Kittery-resident Betsy Wish, featured lobster and clam chowders and homemade pies. Lobster was generously donated by Seaview Lobster, Taylor Seafood, Chrissy D. Lobster Co., and Island Seafood. We are also grateful for the support of our sponsors including Anchor Real Estate, New England Marine and Industrial, Kennebunk Savings Bank, Kittery Trading Post, Loco Coco’s Tacos, and Kittery Ace Hardware, and the many local businesses who donated food, supplies, and auction items.

Then on April 9, Worthy Wednesday at The Burleigh in Kennebunkport took the spotlight. As part of the restaurant’s charitable dining series, ten percent of the evening’s proceeds directly supported MLCA. Guests enjoyed Burleigh’s regular menu along with a couple of special lobster dishes and enjoyed talking about the challenges facing the lobster fishery and the work MLCA is doing to support lobstering families. Proceeds from each event do directly to our work sustain Maine’s working waterfronts and promote the stories of lobstermen and women.

Looking ahead, supporters of our lobster community have another opportunity to get involved. Tickets are now on sale for Music, Masts & Lobster Traps, set for August 25 in scenic Boothbay at the Boothbay Railway Museum. This festive summer event will feature live music from the Mallett Brothers Band, The Ole Dusty’s, and Paddy Mills, along with coastal cuisine and local brew — all to benefit the MLCA. This will be the third year of Music, Masts & Lobster Traps; event tickets can be purchased on our website, www.mlcalliance.org under “events.”

These events (and more to come!) underscore how Mainers — and lobster lovers everywhere — are rallying to ensure the future of the state’s most iconic catch and the communities that depend on it.
